When you’re looking to start work as a food delivery or courier driver, sorting out the insurance you need can feel like a complicated part of the process. At Zego, we’re here to help you on your journey to your new job.

In this post, we’ll take a look at the type of insurance you need, how long it takes to get set up and how much your upfront costs are likely to be. That way, you’ll be able to get out on the road with the cover you need at a price that works for you.

What insurance do you need for food delivery work?

There are two important types of insurance that you’ll need to have in place to carry out food delivery work. The first is Social, Domestic & Pleasure (SD&P) insurance, which covers you for your personal driving. That includes activities such as using your car or scooter to go to the shops.

In addition to SD&P cover, you’ll also need to have Hire & Reward (H&R) insurance in place to cover your delivery work. H&R protects you for carrying food or parcels in exchange for payment.

Even if you only plan to use your vehicle for your work, you still need to have both in place to ensure you’re covered legally.

How much does it cost to get started?

If you choose our flexible pay-as-you-go cover, you’ll need to top up your account to get started. The money you add to your account will then be used to cover your first few shifts once you start food delivery work with any of our partnered work providers. Once you’ve topped up your account, you can view all your important documents on the Zego app.

If you set up a combined delivery insurance policy, you will need to make an upfront payment for your policy. However, if you choose an annual insurance option, you can spread the remaining cost over a series of monthly payments. Once your policy is set up, we’ll send you a copy of your documents by email.
