At Zego, we’re continuing to monitor the COVID-19 situation in the UK as it develops. We know that as a private hire driver, you may face challenging situations and want to take some time away from work. During this time, we’re here to support you.

As well as ensuring you have cover that meets your needs, we also want to protect you against underinsurance. In this post, we’ll take a detailed look at policy downgrades. We’ll explain how they can help you save money if you’re not working during lockdown.

What does a downgraded policy cover you for?

Your standard Private Hire insurance policy includes cover for private hire work, your personal driving and delivery work. When you downgrade your policy, you’re insured for Social, Domestic & Pleasure use only, so it’s perfect if you’re taking some time away from work.

With a downgraded policy, you’re still insured to use your vehicle for your personal driving, such as going to the shops, but you won’t be covered to pick up passengers in exchange for payment.

What happens when you return to work?

Before you return to work, it’s important to make sure that you upgrade your policy once again to include cover for private hire work. If you fail to do so, you will not have the right cover in place to carry out private hire work. There can be a range of consequences if you’re caught driving without the correct insurance in place, some of which can be severe.

How much money could a downgraded policy save you?

By downgrading your Private Hire insurance policy to Social, Domestic & Pleasure only cover, you could save up to 50% on the total cost of your premium. That way, you won’t have to pay for any cover you don’t need if you’re not working and you can still use your car for your personal driving.

Our downgraded policies offer you a cheaper alternative to a full private hire insurance if you’re using your car only for your personal driving. If you choose to cancel your insurance, it’s important to declare your car off road until you’re back to work.
