When you’re looking to start work as a food delivery or courier driver, there are a few things you’ll need to organise first. You’ll need to speak to a work providing platform, you have to decide on a vehicle to use for your work and, if you plan to use a car, scooter or motorbike, you’ll need to have Hire & Reward insurance in place.

In this post, we’ll cover 5 common questions our customers have about delivery insurance. You’ll have all the information you need to get the cover you need and start food delivery and courier work as quickly as possible.

Why do I need delivery insurance for food delivery or courier work?

Social, Domestic & Pleasure (SD&P) insurance, which covers you for the everyday use of your vehicle does not protect you for food delivery or courier work. In addition to your underlying SD&P policy, you are required by law to have Hire & Reward (H&R) insurance in place to cover your work.

I only want to use my vehicle for work. Do I still have to purchase SD&P?

Yes, absolutely. It’s a legal requirement to have SD&P cover in place on your vehicle at all times, even if you only use your vehicle when you’re working.

How much will it cost?

It depends. Different people pay different amounts for their insurance cover. However, you can get a rough idea of how much it will cost by filling in your details using the form below.

How do I show my work provider I have this cover in place?

You’ll need to show your work provider some proof that your vehicle is covered for Hire & Reward work. Your insurer may send you an insurance certificate or a letter of enrolment which you can show to your work provider.
