Some handy items to keep in your car to protect yourself and your passengers in these challenging times.

As life in the UK edges closer towards a new normal, safety practices for private hire drivers are becoming more commonplace. It’s important to follow these guidelines as much as possible, to ensure your car is COVID-19 secure and to protect yourself and others. We’ve put together a list of key items to keep in your vehicle that can keep you and your passengers safe and healthy, and allow you to keep working as much as possible.

Masks

Masks are now compulsory on public transport in England, including all private hire vehicles. A mask for yourself is essential for keeping yourself and your passengers safe from the virus, which can be transmitted via droplets in the air. As your passengers are also required to wear masks, it may be a good idea to keep some spare reusable masks in your car, to provide to any passengers that may have forgotten theirs.

Hand sanitiser

Although washing your hands for 20 seconds using hot water and soap is the best way to practice hand hygiene, the government has stated that hand sanitiser is also effective in killing the virus and other germs that may be on your hands. Keeping a bottle of hand sanitiser in the car that is accessible to both you and your passengers is a great way to add an extra precaution against COVID-19.

Tissues

Although masks should be worn at all times, if you need to sneeze or cough it is recommended that you do so into a tissue that can then be disposed of. Having tissues on hand for both yourself and your passengers is a great way to ensure any droplets that can be spread through sneezes can be caught and thrown away safely to avoid transmission.

A jumper

Ventilation can help stop the spread of COVID-19, by ensuring the air in the vehicle is recycled. As a result, it is recommended that you keep at least one window open throughout your ride. This can mean the car could get a bit chilly, especially in the evening, so we recommend keeping a jumper handy so that you can keep warm while staying safe at the same time.
