We take a look at the cover you need to work as a food delivery or courier driver.

Whether you’re just looking to start out as a food delivery or courier driver, or you have a number of years of experience making deliveries with your car, it’s important to make sure you have the right insurance cover in place.

Not only is it a legal requirement to have the right cover in place, but your insurance is there to protect you if you’re ever involved in an incident when you’re behind the wheel.

In this post, we’ll take a look at the cover you need to have in place to work as a food delivery or courier driver in the UK. We’ll also explore the different car delivery insurance options available with Zego and we’ll show you how you can get started with your quote.

What are the insurance requirements for delivery drivers?

To work as a delivery driver, you’ll need to have both Social, Domestic & Pleasure (SD&P) and Hire & Reward (H&R) cover in place. SD&P is your standard, underlying car insurance that protects you for the everyday use of your vehicle, such as driving to the shops or going to visit a friend. Unless your vehicle has been declared off-road, it is a legal requirement to have SD&P cover in place.

However, your SD&P alone is not enough to cover your delivery work. You’ll also need to have H&R cover in place, which protects you for carrying goods, such as food or parcels, in exchange for payment.

What options are available with Zego?

At Zego, we offer a range of delivery insurance options for car drivers. Whether you’re working for 5 or 50 hours a week, we have a policy designed for you.

Zego is the only provider of pay-as-you-go H&R insurance in the UK. Our flexible, pay-as-you-go cover is a good option if you’re working part-time or up to around 20 hours per week. You only pay for your delivery insurance when you’re actually making deliveries, so you only pay for the cover you actually use.

If you work full-time as a delivery driver, or you find that your pay-as-you-go cover has become expensive, you may wish to consider a fixed-term policy. Our 30-day car delivery insurance offers you a fixed price for unlimited deliveries.

We also offer combined delivery insurance policies that include all the cover you need for your work and personal driving, valid for either 30-days or for a full year. For more information about our combined delivery insurance, you can call our team on 0203 053 9815.
