We explore the benefits of pay-as-you-go insurance and how it works.

At Zego, we offer insurance that’s suitable for any type of working schedule. Whether you’re looking to work for just a couple of hours per week or more regularly for a few months or a full year, we aim to provide you with a policy that suits your needs. We understand it’s not always easy to understand what a policy covers you for and whether it is the most appropriate, which is why we have carefully formed this guide to our pay-as-you-go policy available in Ireland. In this blog post, we will discuss how it works, outline its benefits and explain why it’s a particularly suitable option for part-time delivery drivers.

How does it work?

With Zego’s pay-as-you-go insurance, you only pay for the cover you need, just for the time that you need it. We are partnered with major work providing platforms such as Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Just Eat to cover you for the exact time you are on shift. Your work provider will let us know when you start and stop making your deliveries, so you can get cover for the exact time that you need it.

What does it cover me for?

As a delivery policy, Zego’s pay-as-you-go policy covers you for Hire & Reward (H&R). H&R insurance allows you to carry goods in your vehicle and exchange this for payment at the completion of a delivery. Having this insurance in place is a legal requirement for this type of work and attempting to do this without valid cover can have some serious consequences in the form of fines, points on your license or even vehicle impounding.

Since you only require this type of cover while you work we are able to offer the pay-as-you-go policy, however, it is important to note that you will also need to have Social, Domestic & Pleasure (SD&P) insurance in place too in order to be eligible. This is your standard vehicle insurance covering you for your personal use and is necessary for your vehicle to be roadworthy.

How much does it cost?

The hourly rate for your delivery insurance is calculated based on a variety of things, such as what vehicle you drive, your age, address as well as your driving and claims history.

The fastest way to find out how much you'll pay is to get a quote. It only takes a few minutes, and we'll give you a price right away.

How does payment work?

Payment for our pay-as-you-go insurance is made using your Zego balance. The process is similar to an Oyster card or a top-up mobile phone. When you set your account up with Zego, you top up with an initial starting balance of €25. This money is stored in your account as credit to cover your first few shifts.

Once you’ve started your food delivery or courier work, you’ll pay for your cover using the credit in your Zego balance. Whenever the credit in your account drops below €5, it will automatically top-up again, just to make sure you’ve always got enough money in your account to continue to take out your cover.

Which insurance policy is right for me?

Generally, pay-as-you-go policies are most suitable for part-time drivers or any individual working less than 30 hours each week. If you are working more frequently than this, you would likely be saving more by upgrading to one of our fixed term policies.

Our pay-as-you-go products are perfect for those looking to try out food delivery or courier work to see if it’s right for them, or for riders who do delivery work alongside other jobs as an additional source of income.

If you use our flexible policy but begin to work more regularly, upgrading to a fixed term policy is a very straightforward process with no administrative fees and can be done by getting in touch with our friendly customer service team!
