Behavioural insight led insurance cuts delivery driver claims by up to 30%

  • Fleets of couriers see better driving and a major reduction in claims after taking part in Zego’s Risk Management Academy
  • The number of claims among the three most recent fleets in the trials sees claims drop by 22%
September, London – Fleets of delivery drivers participating in Zego’s Risk Management Academy have seen a fall of 22 per cent in insurance claims after behavioural data-led telematics systems were fitted to their vehicles, despite the surge in home delivery prompted by the pandemic.

The three most recent companies to take part in Zego’s Risk Management Academy – Blue Sky Logistics, SJA Logistics, and VanUp – spent three months trialling the commercial motor insurer’s fleet policy. During this time, managers were provided with a tailored approach by a road risk manager alongside their behavioural data to help improve the fleet's performance.

Where drivers were showing high-risk driving behaviours, managers were able to facilitate conversations to encourage safer behaviour on the road and lower their number of insurance claims.

Overall, twenty-eight fleets (over 1,210 vehicles) have taken part in Zego’s Risk Management Academy trials and have so far seen a 30 per cent reduction in claims on average. Zego’s pioneering technology combines digital solutions and an in-house road risk management team, enabling fleet managers to engage their drivers with behavioural scores. Supporting fleet managers in effective ways to communicate changes to driving styles can reduce the likelihood of a collision and place the fleet in a good position for their insurance costs. Fleets that use Zego’s insights can unlock up to 15 per cent cashback on their policy at renewal.

The most recent three-month trial of the technology and programme across three fleets follows the launch of Zego’s self-serve dashboard. The self-serve dashboard offers personalised, actionable insights and useful tips for fleet managers to coach high-risk drivers. It has been used to manage over 1,500 vehicles. On average, fleet managers have seen a 15 per cent improvement in fleet scores resulting in a 17 per cent reduction in claims frequency due to proactively engaging with Zego's unique behavioural data.

Don McCormack, Managing Director of B2B at Zego, said: “Today’s data clearly shows that businesses can improve road safety and cut costs by using data-led telematics. Fleet businesses feel pressure to reduce costs as economic conditions worsen and keep up with customer demand post-pandemic. Fairer and more flexible insurance will provide a lifeline for many in the long run.
“Zego's unique risk management technology has provided a viable way for fleet owners to regain control of their insurance policies. By using these insights to improve their behaviour, they can unlock up to 15 per cent cashback on their policy.”

Leigh Cotterill of Blue Sky Logistics said: “The overall score gives you a very rounded overview of the driver's performance – some telematics data only tell you about one specific moment whereas Zego’s data is continuous. That is the power of this management system. It’s more complete and provides an overview of everything. It saves us a great deal of time and money.”

Peter Livings of VanUp said: "Reducing cost is very important in every business and Zego understands our needs. Driver behaviour monitoring allows us to keep in touch with drivers and communicate the importance of driving safely. Accidents will always happen, but if we can reduce the risk, it is a win-win".

Commenting on the RM Academy, Vicky East from one of the fleets, SJA Logistics, added: “We’ve been able to get data on how our drivers are driving, accelerating, sharp braking and cornering and seeing the impact of that in damages on the vans.”

Fleet businesses that sign up for Zego’s behavioural-driven insurance access an end-to-end insurance management solution that provides 360 insights on how their fleet performs from a risk standpoint and the tools needed to reduce risk. They can instantly add or remove vehicles from the policy, supporting the fast-growing fleet market and helping courier and private hire companies onboard new workers quickly and easily.
