We take a look at some of the most common questions your clients may have regarding the ABAX solution.

At Zego, we design insurance solutions to help save fleet owners time and money, powering more opportunities for businesses to thrive. With Zego’s usage-based cover, your clients pay by the mile, so they never pay more than they need to. The cost of your client’s insurance isn’t based on how their fleet might work, but how it actually does.

We’re partnered with ABAX, a world-class telematics provider, to help provide our flexible insurance for fleets. With the ABAX device installed in your client’s vehicles, they can keep track of how much time their vehicles spend on the road and the distance they cover, so they only pay for the cover you use.

In this post, we’ll take a look at some of the most frequently asked questions we hear regarding the ABAX solution. We’ll also explore some of the benefits of installing these devices and show you how you can get started with your quote for flexible Fleet insurance.

What if my client’s vehicles already have telematics installed?

We understand why your client may wish to use any existing telematics devices they have installed for their policy with Zego. However, we still ask that your clients set up the ABAX device in their vehicles to use our cover, so that we can bill them automatically each month for their mileage, which can save them a lot of manual work.

Zego has chosen ABAX from a wide range of providers. We believe that they provide the best service, the most accurate data and have the solution that will suit the widest possible section of our customers.

Would installing the ABAX device affect my client’s existing telematics?

Any existing telematics devices will not be affected by installing the ABAX solution in a vehicle. We are pleased to say that the ABAX unit is fully EMC certified. Think of it like having two mobile phones in the same vehicle; they are able to work independently and not affect each other.

How much space does the ABAX device take up?

The ABAX unit is very small, weighing just under 50g and measuring 46mm x 46mm x 18mm. It can also be installed in a number of different areas in your client’s vehicles, so the amount of space it takes up won’t be a problem.

How much power does the ABAX solution use?

We understand that you may have questions about how much installing the ABAX device affects the vehicle’s battery. Each unit has a maximum power draw of <50mA, a passive Power draw of <7mA and a sleep Power Draw of <1mA, so it will not adversely affect a vehicle’s battery life.

Will installing the ABAX solution affect my client’s warranty or leasing conditions?

As the ABAX device is not hard wired into a vehicle, it can be easily installed or removed without damaging the vehicle. Simply connect the device to a power source and then stick it to an area or surface within the vehicle. There’s no need to use an OBD port, so your clients won’t encounter any issues at serving time.

Do the devices need to be installed before my client’s policy starts?

All vehicles must be fitted with an ABAX telematics device within 14 days of that vehicle being added to the policy through the Zego portal. Once fitted, continuing cover for any vehicle under this policy is conditional upon the telematics device remaining live at all times.

Until the devices are installed, your clients must record and report their fleet’s mileage from the beginning of the policy via the vehicle's odometer, or using their existing telematics.

What if my client adds a new vehicle during their policy?

If your clients add a new vehicle to their policy, they will need to acquire a new device from ABAX and ensure that the device is installed as soon as possible within the 14 days (if not before coverage begins), and record any used mileage before the device is installed.

Where can the ABAX devices be ordered?

You can order ABAX devices via your Zego representative. Your devices will arrive within 48 hours from the moment the contract is signed.

How do you know that the mileage readings are genuine?

The ABAX device monitors mileage in real-time using GPS tracking and complies with HMRC and GDPR requirements.

How much does the ABAX device cost?

Zego pays for the device itself but your client may be required to pay the data cost which starts at £5.50 per device per month for the basic package, and more if the client decides to upgrade the data they wanted tracked.

What are the benefits of installing the ABAX device?

Aside from access to a fairer premium, your clients can also access a great range of benefits including detailed insights into the performance of their drivers, their operational efficiency and streamlined tax compliance.
