Last week we launched our flexible van courier insurance to the U.K. market. Van drivers can now purchase pay-as-you-go Hire & Reward insurance to cover their part-time delivery and courier services.
Our aim at Zego is to create insurance products which enable people to work how, when and where they want. For some time a change has been taking place across the labour market. Gone are the days employees would spend their corporate lifetime within the same business working from 9–5, Monday to Friday. Now it is broadly accepted that people will work in a number of different areas across their professional career, often across multiple sectors and industries.
The rise of eCommerce has created a huge demand for courier and parcel delivery work, particularly at certain times of year. During busier periods, it is essential for companies to have enough delivery drivers on their books to keep up with increases in online orders.
Traditional insurance has been offered on an annual basis, which has meant that workers have been faced with the high up-front costs in order to take out a policy. This has left people with two choices:
a) to not enter the market to begin with, or
b) to work in a full-time capacity to justify the annual cost.
In line with the flexible nature of courier and delivery work, the option to pay for commercial van insurance by the hour means that van drivers only pay for the cover they actually need, just during the time that they work. Delivery and courier work is opened up to part-time workers by providing them with access to flexible insurance that suits their needs. We think it’s important to protect the freedom offered by flexible work, and insurance should not stand in the way of people pursuing the work that they want to.Through our technology, van drivers are able to integrate directly with partnered work providing platforms, which means they are covered automatically, just for the duration of their shift. At the end of their shift, our cover switches off. After the first hour of cover, the insurance is charged per minute, with rates starting from £0.80 per hour.

We believe that insurance should not be a barrier of entry to flexible work, but instead should empower people to work how they want to.
