How to compare telematics policies as a learner driver

Most guides to learner insurance assume you are 17. If you are learning later, the comparison looks different, and telematics is where a lot of the confusion sits.

Here is what telematics actually changes for a learner, and what to compare before you buy.

Do you need a black box as a learner

Telematics comes in two shapes. Some policies fit a device to the car. Others use an app on your phone.

That difference matters more for learners than for almost anyone else, because plenty of learners practise in a car they do not own. Fitting hardware to your mum's car is a conversation. Downloading an app is not.

  • Fitted box. An engineer installs a device in the car. It stays with that vehicle.
  • Plug-in device. You fit it yourself, into a socket or port.
  • App-based. Your phone's sensors do the measuring. Nothing gets installed.

Learning in someone else's car

The question most learners actually want answered is whether a bump wrecks the car owner's no-claims discount.

With a separate learner policy in the learner's own name, it should not. Zego's learner cover runs independently of the owner's policy, so a claim on it does not affect their No Claims Discount.

Check this explicitly with every provider you compare. It is the single most valuable thing a learner policy does for the person lending you their car.

Learning in your own car

If you have bought a car before passing, you need cover in your own name from the day you get the keys. A learner policy on your own car does that, and telematics is one way to bring the price down when you have no claims history to lean on.

What to compare across learner policies

Work through these before you choose:

  1. Whose car. Some policies cover your own car, some cover somebody else's, and some do both.
  2. How long the cover runs. Annual policies and short-term policies solve different problems.
  3. What happens when you pass. Some policies carry on, some end. Ask, do not assume.
  4. What gets measured. Speed, braking, acceleration, cornering and time of day are the usual factors.
  5. Whether hardware gets fitted. Ask whether it is an app or a box, especially in a borrowed car.
  6. The owner's no-claims discount. Confirm that a claim will not affect it.
  7. Excess and cancellation fees. Compare these, not just the headline price.
  8. Test day. Check whether the policy covers your driving test.

Providers vary most on the third and eighth points, so get those two in writing.

How pricing works when you have no claims history

A learner has no claims record, so insurers fall back on age, postcode and the car. That is a blunt instrument, and it is a large part of why learner premiums look the way they do.

Telematics gives them something better to price on. With Zego, your phone builds a driver rating from how you actually drive, so the price reflects your driving rather than just your age or job title.

Learner insurance with Zego

Zego's learner driver insurance is an annual policy, app-based, with no black box to fit.

  • Drive your own car, or a friend or family member's
  • App-based telematics throughout, so nothing gets installed in the car
  • A driver rating built from how you drive, which feeds a personalised quote at renewal
  • The car owner's No Claims Discount stays protected

To be eligible you need to be 25–60, living in the UK, holding a full or provisional UK licence, with no previous claims or motoring convictions, in a car worth under £30,000.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get learner insurance on my own car?

Yes. Zego covers learners in their own car, or in a friend or family member's car.

Will a claim affect the car owner's no-claims discount?

Not with a separate learner policy. Zego's learner cover runs independently, so a claim on it does not affect the owner's No Claims Discount.

Do I need a black box fitted to the car?

No. Zego's learner policy is app-based, so nothing gets installed.

Who can supervise me while I am learning?

Your supervisor needs to be at least 21 and to have held a full licence for that category of vehicle for at least three years. The current rules are on GOV.UK.

Is learner insurance only for young drivers?

No. Zego's learner cover is for drivers aged 25 to 60, so it is built for people learning later rather than for teenagers.

If you are learning in your own car or in somebody else's, get a learner quote and see what app-based cover looks like for you.
