Working in wet weather can be both dangerous and uncomfortable. We've put together some top tips to help keep your spirits up when it's pouring down.

When you work as a scooter delivery rider, you’ll already be familiar with how the weather conditions you’re working in can have a big impact upon how comfortable you are on your shift. As we all know, there is no day, week or month that is safe from downpours in the UK, so it’s always a good idea to be prepared for a rainy day.

In this post, we’ll take a look at some top tips for working as a delivery driver when you’re exposed to the elements. We’ll look at what you can do to ensure you stay as safe as possible in unfavourable conditions.

What should you wear?

If you’re heading out when the forecast isn’t looking too bright, it’s a good idea to make sure you put on your most waterproof clothing. Spending a long period of time in clothes that are soaked through becomes uncomfortable very quickly, so you’re going to want to try to keep your under-layers dry for as long as you can.

The key to staying dry is picking clothes that are made of the right materials. Stay well clear of denim trousers and canvas shoes, as these will become heavy when wet.

What should you do with your phone?

This is probably the hardest part of working as a delivery driver on a rainy day. At the very least, a waterproof phone protector is a must. Not only is it important to keep your phone dry so that it still works, but if you’re working in areas that you don’t know very well, you’re going to need the help of your phone for directions.

In very heavy rain, some riders find it difficult to follow the directions shown on their phone’s map. If this is familiar to you, you may want to keep a dry cloth handy to wipe down your phone screen when it’s safe to do so. If you can store the cloth inside your bike, it’ll help to keep it drier for longer.

If you’ve used your phone in the rain before, you’ll know how raindrops have a nasty habit of acting like taps on the screen. If you need to type out a message on your phone, or use your device for a longer period of time, finding cover overhead can make this much easier.

What else should you consider?

Although food delivery work is usually busy on rainy nights, as people tend to be more reluctant to leave their houses, finding shelter between orders can help you stay dry.

It’s also important to take extra care when using your vehicle in wet weather. Driving in bad conditions can be extremely dangerous, so you should always pay extra attention to your surroundings, especially if your visibility is reduced.

If you find that the conditions you're working in are extremely dangerous, it’s a good idea to find cover and wait for the worst of the rain to pass over.
