We spoke to Said to get his thoughts on his work, his experience with Zego and his top tips for aspiring private hire drivers.

This week, Said, a Zego customer, shared his thoughts on his work, his experience with Zego and how he’s getting on in light of the recent developments around COVID-19.

Hello Said, how do you find your work as a private hire driver?

It’s refreshing as you are your own boss, which gives you much more control over the times and days you want to work.

What’s the best part of private hire work?

No two days are the same. Every day you go to work and you meet different people. I also enjoy driving in different parts of London, especially If I haven’t been to them before.

Do you have any worries or concerns regarding your work?

Every job has its worries, and private hire work is no different. You may have quieter periods, you may have someone who is a little drunk or someone who is rude to you.

Do you have any tips for other drivers looking to start private hire work?

Be respectful, helpful and let your customers choose the radio station that they want to listen to. Or you can even offer them the option to play their music with an auxiliary cable. If you are changing the route, you should always let them know what the GPS is showing and explain why you’re changing it.

What does a normal working day look like for you?

It varies from day to day. Week days are mostly busy during rush hour whereas the weekend is fairly busy all day.

Very good. I’ve always found the team at Zego to be really helpful whenever I need assistance. It’s great that Zego tries to involve their drivers in their research to try and improve the services they provide.

Finally, how do you feel about your work in light of the recent developments regarding COVID-19? Have you noticed any changes to your private hire work because of this?

I have not been working since the lockdown. We need to protect each other. The job is not very busy at the moment and the risks are too high for everybody. I know some drivers who are still working, but there are not enough jobs out there at the moment. As lockdown continues, it would be great if we could use protective screens, like the ones that taxi drivers use so we can feel safe when we do our jobs.
