Our guide to choosing your level of cover

Published on

The level of cover is one of the most important parts of your insurance policy. It determines how much protection you have in the event of an accident, as well as what you are and are not covered for.

When you’re looking for more information around levels of insurance cover, you’re likely to come across lots of acronyms, such as FC, TPFT and TPO. These all stand for the different levels of cover that are available: Fully Comprehensive, Third Party, Fire & Theft and Third Party Only.

We know that these terms can seem confusing at first and it’s not easy to understand the differences between each one. In this post, we’ll explain what different levels of cover protect you against, so you can always get the policy that suits you best.

Third Party Only

Third Party Only cover is the most basic level of cover. It will protect you for any damage you do to another person, their property or their vehicle in the event of an accident where you are found at fault.

However, it’s important to note that if you choose Third Party Only cover, you are not insured for any damage done to you or your vehicle in the event of a fault accident. However, if you are not at fault, these costs will be covered by the third party’s insurance. You are also not covered for the theft of your vehicle, or if it is damaged by fire.

As it is the most basic level of cover, Third Party Only cover often works out cheaper. However, this comes at the cost of a lower level of protection.

Third Party, Fire & Theft

Third Party, Fire & Theft covers you for all the same things as Third Party Only cover, but it also protects you for the theft of your vehicle or for damage in the event of a fire.

However, it still doesn’t cover you or your vehicle in the event of an accident where you are found at fault. If you are not at fault, however, these costs will be covered by the third party’s insurance.

Fully Comprehensive

Fully Comprehensive is the highest level of cover. Unlike Third Party cover options, you and your vehicle are also protected in the event of an accident where you are found at fault.

As Fully Comprehensive cover offers you the greatest amount of protection, it is likely to be more expensive that Third Party cover options. However, you may wish to pay a higher premium for greater peace of mind.
